Why is polishing necessary?
After painting, even if it is polished very well, it is impossible to form a completely smooth coating. This is because the painted surface deforms due to drying shrinkage.
By the way, if we have a matte finish, these deformations of the paint after drying may not be noticeable at all.
What is a polishing wheel?
The polishing wheel is the main element of polishing technology. The abrasive polishing wheel is a disc with a diameter of about 20 cm, whose working surface has a layer of felt, felt or other material, which is used for polishing.
The other side of the polishing wheel has a special threaded mount so that the polishing wheel remains on the tool while working. Velcro is a new fastening method.
How should the surface to be polished be polished?
The final coat to be polished is applied to the already polished ground surface, usually in several stages. The last level of grinding should be carried out with a material with a particle size of about P600 for polyester materials and about P500 for polyurethane materials.
Before polishing, the final coat must be sanded to remove the macroscopic roughness (about ten microns) that inevitably occurs during the application process.
For the subsequent polishing to be effective, it is required that the height of the concave and convex after grinding does not exceed 2 microns. This can be achieved by sanding in 2-3 stages, with the last stage material having a grit of 1500-2000 (curls after 1500 grit sandpaper are more difficult to remove by polishing than after 2000 grit sandpaper).
What sandpaper is best for sanding before polishing?
For polishing sanding, it is best to use film sandpaper. Usually, the particles on such sandpaper have minimal dispersion, and the elastic base provides a moderate depth of marks.
The presence of a dust-proof coating is also useful; on such skins, curl defects are less noticeable. The last grinding before polishing can be carried out not only with sandpaper, but also with abrasive paste, since free particles cut into the surface less than particles on sandpaper.
How does polishing differ from grinding?
If we want to obtain a mirror-gloss surface, then we have to deal with completely different laws of optics.
The difference in the size of irregularities detected by the human eye on matte and mirror-gloss surfaces is about hundreds of times. Mirror smoothness of a surface cannot be achieved using the same methods as grinding.
Grinding is basically a cutting process, while polishing is the removal of the smallest irregularities after grinding.
